Biography of Nadia Chen

Hong Kong is home, it’s where I was born, raised and educated. While studying Linguistics in university, I joined a few voluntary trips to developing countries such as Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam. It was during this time that I discovered my passion for teaching children. Having gone through the Hong Kong traditional education system then gaining relevant work experiences in different countries, I have reflected that children worldwide intrinsically play. I believe that it’s best if children are given the opportunity to learn through play.

I have worked in a tutorial centre and noticed that our Hong Kong children lead a very structured life. A typical day would be going to school, and then either attending tutorial classes or joining extra-curricular activities after school, leaving little time to play on their own or with their friends. It is understandable that many parents place a high emphasis on academic results in a hope of boosting their children’s competitiveness. However, education should never be a race or a competition. Childhood should be fun and full of play opportunities, with time to explore the world in their own ways.

My prior work experience includes a job at a baby gym, a place filled with genuine laughter. The center aimed to foster young children’s self-esteem and confidence through free play, guided physical activities and gymnastics. I worked with children from 6 months to 5 years old. As they play, the little ones not only cultivate a healthy lifestyle, but also develop creativity, social, emotional, physical, fine and gross motor skills.

In my spare time, I love hiking and travelling. I enjoy going out into nature as well as learning about different cultures in foreign places. These experiences encourage me to step out of my comfort zone, keeping my mind calm while gaining new insights.

The belief that every child should be granted the right to play and laugh has brought me here to Fairchild Junior Academy to continue my passion in the field of early childhood. I am thrilled to work in a nurturing environment where children are happy and encouraged to learn at their own pace!
